Huawei announced today that it has signed a Global Frame Agreement on Internet of Elevators & Escalators (IoEE) with Schindler Group, a leading global elevator manufacturer. Huawei and Schindler Group will cooperate in the future on the development of smart Internet-of-Things (IoT) components for a seamless connectivity of elevators and escalators.
Huawei and Schindler will establish global partnership to develop a Connected Elevators Solution that is open, flexible, and scalable. The new IoT connectivity solution is an important element of Schindler’s digital platform and will enable Schindler to better monitor, analyze and leverage data generated from its elevators and escalators, and support the unified connection and management of Schindler’s one million elevators around the world.

More than one billion users rely on Schindler’s mobility solutions every day. Timely and efficient management of these assets is critical for safety and customer satisfaction.

“We are proud to extend our digital ecosystem with Huawei as one of the global technology leaders. The cooperation will help us to significantly reduce time-to-market for our new digital offerings”, says Thomas Oetterli, CEO of the Schindler Group.

“Huawei is very pleased to partner with Schindler by providing the innovative technologies and solutions to empower Schindler’s digital transformation to enhance service reliability and customer experience”, says Eric Xu, Rotating CEO of Huawei.

Data analytics firm Lux Research reported that by 2020, the global Industrial IoT (IIoT) will be worth an estimated US$151 billion. The IIoT includes factory machinery and industrial products, with one typical example being the Internet of Elevators & Escalators (IoEE). IoT technology transmits operational data from the elevators in real-time to enable elevator data simulation, achieving preventive maintenance through and cloud-based big data analysis. Elevator safety will be significantly enhanced, while the operational cost of the elevators can be largely reduced.

TWIN two elevators in one hoistway

The idea of having two independent elevators in the same shaft dates back in the 1930s, but it took modern-day technology to turn it into the reality. To make this system work and achieve intelligent control ThyssenKrupp needed to use advanced destination dispatch system.
ThyssenKrupp is comparing the efficiency of TWIN technology to four shaft elevator group. In case you decide to use TWIN you will have one shaft less – two TWIN systems and one regular single elevator system. This means more floor space, but in case one TWIN system goes down, it means more inconvenience.

The two TWIN cabs are prevented from getting too close by a quadruple redundant safety system: intelligent allocation of calls; automatic monitoring of minimum safety distances; emergency stop function if the safety distance is breached; and automatic engagement of the safety device in the extremely unlikely event that the first three stages fail. The TWIN system has been fully certified for safety by the German TÜV inspectorate.
In my opinion, the system would be very efficient in office buildings where companies reside on multiple floors and travel between a few floors is required.

Elevator Motor That Helped Save Thousands

This article appeared in the Downtown Express
By Julie Shapiro
A 10,000-pound elevator motor that shuttled hundreds of people a day at the original World Trade Center will be part of the National Museum's permanent exhibit.
The exhibit will also tell the story of John Menville, who arrived at the World Trade Center in 1969 to install the elevators, on 9/11, thousands of people, including Menville, used the elevators to evacuate. When the first plane hit, Menville's immediate thought was of how long it would take to repair the elevators.
When Menville, now 65, helped install the massive 8-foot-by-5-foot motors, called 339 machines, they were the first in North America and the biggest in the world. The only place they had ever been used before was in South African diamond mines.
After installing the elevators, Menville and his coworkers from Otis Elevator Company got to test-ride them, flying through the building at 1,600 feet per minute.
The elevator motor will sit at bedrock in the museum, in a vast corridor dotted with other large objects, like twisted steel and crushed emergency vehicles. Visitors will pass through the gallery on their way to the primary exhibit, where they will see the story of 9/11 told through the eyes of the individuals who experienced it.
